Heraldry (Blazon of Arms and Flag)

Virgin Mary wearing a purple robe and blue-sky mantle, crowned with silver, with a lily in the right hand and the Baby Jesus in the left arm. It is flanked by two silver castle towers carved in black and with two ancient Portuguese shields bearing five small escutcheons laid in a cross. Each small escutcheon has five silver bezants (an ancient coin). Mural crown with five silver towers and below a listel with the inscription “Braga”.

 

The year of Braga’s raise to city – Founded as Bracara Augusta in the year 14 b. C.

Bracara Augusta, roman name of the city of Braga in northern Portugal, was built were a native village once stood. The roman city was founded by the emperor Cesar Augustus around 16 B. C. after the definitive pacification of the region. During the Flavian era, Bracara Augusta received the municipal statute and was elevated to conventus seat, having the administrative functions of a vast region. After the Dioclecian reform, Braga became the capital of the recent province of Gallaecia. In the 5th century the city was taken by the Suevi who chose it as the capital of their kingdom.

The Municipal Flag – White and blue with lace and tassel in silver and blue. Golden spear and flag pole.

 

The flag has to be rectangular (6x9) or square, to be used as an outdoor flagpole or as an interior or still flag.  
In the centre must have the autarchy’s blazon. 

Brief history of flag use – Its origin goes back to the Middle Ages

To avoid mix ups between the allied armies, a piece of cloth hoisted as a banner with the colours and signs of each battalion or company used to be passed around. Thus avoiding the dreaded enemy fire…
