Município de Braga

Of the various churches in the city, we point out:

Sé Cathedral

The Sé Cathedral (N.M. /P.V.)* is considered the centre of Episcopalian diffusion and one of the most important temples of the Portuguese Roman style. Its history goes back to the work of the first bishop, D. Pedro of Braga, corresponding to the restoration of the Episcopalian See in 1070, of which there are no traces.
In this cathedral, you will find the tombs of Henrique of Borgonha and his wife, Teresa of Leão, the Counts of the Condado Portucalense (first Portuguese County) and parents of king D. Afonso Henriques.

"Igreja do Pópulo" (Pópulo Church)

Pópulo Church (P.I.B./P.V.)* is part of the Pópulo Convent, which worships the Virgin of Santa Maria del Popolo church in Rome. The church and the convent were built throughout the 18th and 19th century. Most of the building (including the façade) is a project of the architect Carlos Amarante.
In 1834, with the extinction of the religious orders, it became the property of the State. In 1841, the Convent began to house the Infantry Regiment.
Today it is one of the buildings belonging to the Braga Municipal Council.

"Igreja e Mosteiro de Tibães" (Church and Monastery of Tibães)

The foundation of the Church and Monastery of Tibães dates back to before the nation was founded. In the late 9th century the Roman monastery was founded, and in 1110 it received the Carta do Couto, given by the Count D. Henrique.

In 1567 it became the headquarters of the Congregation of S. Benedict of Portugal and Brazil. Its restoration and cultural promotion began after haven been bought by the Portuguese Government in 1986, empty and derelict. (I.I.P./M.N./V.)*.

"Capela dos Coimbras" (The Coimbra family Chapel)

This chapel of gothic style (of probable Roman origin) was built in 1528, during the time of the Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, by artists from Buscay, hired for the construction of several buildings in the medieval city of Braga (N.M./P.V.)*.

"Capela de S. Frutuoso" (The Saint Frutuoso Chapel)

This 7TH century temple with a Visigothic style (a controversial feature according to specialists), is the most important example of pre-Roman architecture in the nation and one of the most significant in the peninsula (N.M./I.V.)*.
