Virtual Reconstruction

In order to inform the general public about the ancient history of Braga and to create awareness of the importance and richness of Braga's archeological heritage, a virtual journey to Bracara Augusta was developed. It recreates the origins and foundations of the city and allows access to some of its buildings.

A set of animated images show Roman expansion until the end of the Basque wars which were undertaken by Augusto, the emperor who administered Hispanic territory and founded cities that were connected to each other by a complex network of roads. Bracara Augusta was founded in this context.

A series of models of urbanization in Braga, related to the II and IV centuries and the beginning of the Middle Ages, recreate the transformation of the city in terms of expansion, fortification and withdrawal, thus allowing the narration of some of the facts associated with the historical changes of the city.

Based on knowledge of public and private buildings, two examples were chosen for virtual reconstruction and travel in space and time.

The virtual reconstruction of the thermal baths allows one to move around the interior as the Roman users of the baths would have done, and to visit the maintenance area and understand the heating system in this type of building.

The virtual recreation of the Roman house of Carvalheiras invites us to view the intimate private life of a wealthy family in Bracara Augusta. The model enables us to move around the different rooms, understand their uses, visualize the furniture and see the changes in the house resulting from the installation of a private bathhouse.
