The Remains
The archeological remains resulting from dozens of excavations in Braga over the last 26 years, are diverse and plentiful, and provide us with valuable information about daily life in the city throughout the centuries of Roman occupation.
These remains, which form part of the collection at the D. Diogo Museum, consist mainly of different types and qualities of ceramics, either produced locally or imported from different parts of the Empire; glass objects made in Bracara Augusta or originating from far flung regions of the Roman world; bronze and iron objects which were mainly produced locally; and various coins. The rarer objects comprise the jewels,or the sculptures and statues, some of which are bronze pieces of very high quality.
All the objects help us to identify not only the craft activities that existed in the Roman city but also, external trade and the regions with which Bracara Augusta maintained relations. The coins allow for the study of monetary flow in the city and the quantity of coins in circulation during the different centuries of Roman occupation.
